Total station training for construction helps learners understand how to set up, orientate, check and use a total station for real site setting out tasks. It is a practical competency area, not a standalone Ofqual qualification.
On construction projects, total stations are used to transfer design information from drawings or digital setting-out data onto the ground. They help engineers set out foundations, gridlines, kerbs, drainage, steelwork positions, anchor bolts, road alignments and structural elements with much greater control than tape-only methods.
What a total station does
A total station measures angles and distances from an instrument position to a prism or target. When combined with coordinates, control points and site drawings, it allows a Site Engineer to locate design points and check as-built positions. Manufacturers such as Leica Geosystems and Trimble provide total station systems widely used across surveying and construction.
Training should therefore cover more than pressing buttons. Learners need to understand instrument set-up, control, orientation, backsight checks, prism use, coordinate entry, drawing interpretation and site tolerances.
